HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ITTC

The conception of starting the Islamic Primary Teachers Training College in Mombasa was hatched far back in 1982 by a group of lecturers from Ummul-Qurah University, Makkah Saudi Arabia. This group led by Dr. Muhammad Jameel Khayati had come to Kenya to train teachers to teach Islamic Religious Education in madrasa and schools. The course was very successful. National Union of Kenya Muslims Coast Branch, which was one of the organizers proposed the idea of establishing an Islamic Primary Teachers College to alleviate the chronic shortage of Islamic Religion Education (IRE) Teachers in such that in some areas in Kenya Muslim pupils/students are taught Christian religious education (CRE).Religious studies is mandatory in Kenya Primary Education curriculum.

In 1983 the officials of the National Union of Kenya Muslim (NUKEM) coast branch were able to find a donor, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to construct the college. The college opened its door for the first cohort of students in September, 1994. A total number of fifty (50) male students were admitted at that time. Female students were later on allowed admission into the institution in the year 2004. Since then, the college has been admitting both male and female students from all religions and backgrounds all over Kenya into its teacher education programmes.

The Institution received its Registration Certificate from the Ministry Of Education Science And Technology 1996. The college commenced training teachers for Certificate and Diploma courses in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) in the year 2000. It has since blossomed into market leader in churning out competent teachers for ECDE centres and primary schools for the Coastal Region and Beyond.
